Sheep Heart Dissection Alternative Assignment Objective: Students will be able to identify and state the function of all external and internal structures of a heart Directions 1. Go to internet site http://www.innerbody.com/image/card01.html 2. Observe the external picture of a sheep heart. 3. Take a blank piece of paper and divide it into 3 sections. 4. In one of the sections, draw a large diagram of the external picture. a. It should fill 1/3 of a page b. Drawn in pencil c. Clear, precise lines – no sketches d. Label the 4 chambers of the heart 5. Using the mouse, move the cursor over the heart to identify each structure. Check your answers. (You will see the “auricles” on top of the atria; these are muscular flaps that lie directly over each atria. To identify the atria, you may need to locate it in the left side bar so that it is highlighted.) 6. Click “Change View Angle” above the heart. Choose “Heart, Posterior” to observe the back side of the heart. Repeat steps 4 and 5 with this picture and identify the blood vessels. 7. Click “Change View Angle” above the heart and navigate to “Heart, CrossSection”. Repeat steps 4 and 5. Label chambers, valves, septum and cardiac muscle. Postlab Reflection – attach answers to your diagrams 1. Why did you choose not to participate in the dissection? 2. Were you able to meet the assignment objectives with the alternative assignment? 3. Were you able to tell the right side from the left side (before checking answers)? 4. Which vessels were you able to identify before checking the answers? 5. Was it easier to identify chambers from the external or internal picture and why? 6. Which chamber of the heart is the largest? Why does it need to be larger? 7. What structure separates the left and right sides of the heart? 8. Was this an interesting and useful activity? 9. If you could dissect / or look at the heart of another organism, what would you choose? 10.Do you think you might try the dissection next time?
