2004 Summer Institutes in Spain
We are pleased to announce the 2004 Summer Institutes for Teachers and Administrators offered
by the Embassy of Spain. Please disseminate this information on the different courses to
teachers in your district or schools.
This year we will offer twenty-three different programs at fifteen universities. All of them are
held at prestigious universities in Spain and are taught by specialized professors during the
month of July for three or four weeks.
These are the different institutes:
• Spanish Literature for children and young adults.
• Spanish Language and Culture. (offered by several universities)
• How to teach Spanish Literature to foreign students.
• Teaching Spanish as a second language.
• Teaching Spanish to Spanish Speakers.
• Teaching Spanish using new technologies.
• Methodology and materials for the teaching of Spanish.
• Masters Degree in Spanish language and Culture.

We also offer the following courses:
• Spanish language and culture course for education professionals who are not
teachers. (Social workers, Administrators, Supervisors, Principals, Coordinators,
Heads of Department) University of Granada.
This course is especially designed for people in the field of education who are not
teachers. It aims to address their specific needs for competency in Spanish and
knowledge of Hispanic culture.
• Spanish Language. University of Santiago de Compostela.
•
Introduction to Spanish language and Culture. University of Valladolid
We recommend these courses for ESOL teachers who are not completely fluent in the
Spanish language or for any other professionals who may need to learn the language or
improve their fluency.
The full information, description of courses and application form will be available by the end
of December, 2003 at the following website:
http://www.sgci.mec.es/usa/becas/. There you will find a detailed description of each
program. All the information will be in English and in Spanish.
The courses deal with all aspects of the teaching of Spanish. They also offer classes and
extracurricular activities on history, culture, Spanish traditions and, on occasion, Latin
American traditions. They also offer the opportunity to get to know the traditions of the
people from Spain and to get actively involved in their customs. Credits from different
American colleges and universities can be obtained after completion of the Seminars.
The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Spain and the universities provide
participants with partial scholarships toward the cost of the seminars. In addition to the
scholarships offered by the Embassy of Spain, this is the fifth year that the Florida
Department of Education is offering stipends to cover the full price of the courses for
Spanish, Spanish for Spanish Speakers, English for Speakers of Other Languages, Dual
Language Program teachers and administrators.
The full scholarships will be awarded to twenty teachers and administrators throughout
Florida and will cover the total cost of tuition, room and board, cultural activities and
medical insurance for a minimum of three weeks during the month of July, 2004. The
selected teachers would then only be responsible for the airfare to and from Spain and
incidental personal expenses. The selection of teachers will be based on the application
submitted to the Department, which includes an essay, to be written in Spanish, describing
the teachers' current teaching assignment and their experiences with the teaching of the
Spanish language or in working with students whose heritage language is Spanish.

The enrolment dates for all Florida applicants of full scholarships will be from January 2,
2004 to January 31, 2004. Those teachers awarded the full scholarships will be notified
by the end of February 2004.
To enroll, all applicants must go to http://www.sgci.mec.es/usa/becas/, then click on
Hoja de solicitud / Application form, and fill the form that is appropriate for the
course/s they want to apply to.
We encourage all interested Florida teachers, administrators, and professionals related to
education to apply, as this presents a unique opportunity for them to gain additional language
and cultural experiences that may otherwise be cost prohibitive. If you have any questions or
