At first, Muhammad ‘s teachings challenged and angered many Arabians for several reasons. Many people at the time did not want to abandon their “gods”. Muhammad destroys the idols of the many gods in the Kaaba. Muhammad ‘s teachings challenged and angered many Arabians: Powerful merchants in Mecca feared they would lose money if people stopped coming on pilgrimages to worship the many “gods” at the Kaaba because of Mohammad’s teachings. Muhammad also challenged and angered many Arabians because he taught that followers of Allah would be part of a community where the rich and poor were equal. This teaching threatened rich people in Mecca. Why would the rich be threatened? So what happened to Muhammad and his beliefs? In class reading activity Read “Islam Spreads in Arabia” on pages 63-64. Answer these questions: 1. What was the Hegira? 2. What was a new rule of worship for Muslims? 3. How were Muhammad and his followers able to return to Mecca? It’s not easy being a prophet! Prophets are often “social critics.” Social critics tell people what needs to change to make society better. People often reject the message and get angry— especially when a prophet says that all people in society are equal. Who would get angry about the idea that all people are equal? There was an American hero who was very “prophetic.” He challenged America to live up to the idea that all Americans are equal (like Muhammad did for Arabians in Mecca). This American (a Christian) also led his people on marches for equality. Many Americans became angry at him and the people of his movement, like the people of Mecca did toward Muhammad. Can you name this American and say what happened to him? (Clue: his words are on our campus) Review: Islam was not accepted at first. Muhammad even had to escape to another city, Medina. This trip to Medina is called the Hegira. Because it was so important, Muhammad said this journey would begin the Muslim calendar at year ZERO ! Today, Medina is an important religious city because it is where Mohammad is buried. His grave is in the huge church ( mosque) in this picture. The Hegira was A. Muhammad’s journey from Arabia to Mecca B. Muhammad’s words and actions written down C. The beginning of the Muslim calendar D.The name of Muhammad’s wife 11. Medina is best known as a A.Trade city B. Tourist city C. Religious city D. Manufacturing city Right Side Notebook Activity Write a newspaper article about Muhammad’s departure and return to Mecca in 630 (see page 63). • Write a headline for the story. • Cover the questions: who, what, where, when, why and how regarding Muhammad’s return.
