Action Verbs
What is an action verb?
List some examples of action verbs.
An action verb is a verb that expresses either physical or mental activities.
The owls hooted all night.
Gloria plays volleyball.
Are these physical or mental?
She thought about the problem.
I believe you.
*Action verbs can be transitive or intransitive (we will cover this later :))

Linking Verbs
What is a linking verb?
What is a linking verb's job?
What are some examples of linking verbs?
A linking verb is a verb that expresses a state of being. A linking verb connects, or links, the subject to a word or word group that identifies or describes the subject.
Denzel Washington is an actor.
The children remained quiet.
*Linking verbs never have objects (words that tell who or what recieves the action of the verb). Therefore, linking verbs are always intransitive.

Helping Verbs
Some verbs can be used as either helping or main verbs.
HELPING VERB: Do you like greenbeans?
MAIN VERB: Did you do this math problem?
HELPING VERB: Is she arriving at noon?

HELPING VERB: Have they arrived yet?
MAIN VERB: They have a dog.

Helping Verbs
Sometimes a verb phrase is interrupted by another part of speech. Often the interrupter is an adverb. In a question, however, the subject often interrupts the verb phrase.
Examples:
