Ancient Rome
Architecture and Engineering
Back when Rome was the strongest empire in
the world, they adopted lots of arts and ways of
building of different countries in the world and
made it their own. For example, one of the
architecture skills and arts they adopted were
from the greeks. As you can see from the
example, Roman art and Greek arts are very
similar but not identical because as I said
earlier they adopt it and make it their own but
still, there are similarities that you can still
find. An example of a kind of architecture the
Romans adopted was the arch. The arch was
originally used by the Egyptians, Greek and the
Babylonians. After the Roman conquered
Egypt, they took in the way of building to make
their houses, stadium and large bath houses
more stable. So if u were going to ever visit
Rome back then, you can always tell that this
place is Rome because of it's engineering skills
and architecture style.
Today, you can still find places that are
influenced by the roman architecture and
engineering. One of the places that have been
influenced by Roman architecture was the Ben
Thanh Market right here in Ho Chi Minh City.
Ben Thanh Market’s entrance has a shape of a
vault which was used by the Romans and the
inside of Ben Thanh Market has the shape of an
arch.
Art
When Caesar Augustus, the first emperor of Rome
went up to take his throne, he changed Rome for
forever. Rome started to get interested in arts from
many different places. They were most interested
in the statues and sculptures from Greece. Greece
statues and sculptures were very unique. They
were carved and built very carefully. They looked
very realistic and the color was somehow always
white. Caesar Augustus had very many statues of
himself in a greek made way. He and the greek
ways of building things were very fond of each
other. Another kind of art that the Romans used
was the Mosaic. Mosaic is a kind of art that are
made by tiles. As you can see from the picture
above, Public baths and private baths are made of
mosaic designed tiles and people still used them
today, for example, my bathroom.
Through time, many countries and places still use
Roman arts and people still think they look very
beautiful and amazing. One of the arts used by the
Romans that a lot of fancy hotels use today is the
cameo. Cameo is a kind of art that a person's
portrait is being drawn in a sort of mirror or frame
and then they make the colors messy and then it
becomes a piece of Roman Art.
Politics and government
The Roman forum was where all the important buildings of Rome were located. One
thing that went on in the forum was the senate. The senate was a group of 300 people
that had the authority to create laws that had to be enforced. In these three hundred
people were former Roman magistrates and the two chief magistrates who were called
the consuls or praetors (praetor means leader). The consuls had the power to veto
each other's decisions and to lead armies into battle. The 2 consuls were originally
supposed to be patricians (the higher social class) but in 367 BC plebeians (the lower
social class) were finally able to have the role as consul each year. And so it was
decided. One consul each year was going to be a plebeian and one was going to be a
patrician. Three really important types of people in the government system where: the
emperor, the pontifex maximus, and the consuls. The ancient Roman motto was
SPQR or Senatus Populusque Romanus. This means: “The Senate and People of
Rome.”
Roman government has influenced us in many ways. The Roman empire is long gone
but its legacy still lives on in our buildings and how we handle our government. One
example is the U.S. Senate. They use a similar system that the ancient Romans used
when they held senate meetings. Today we still have a constitution in the United
States of America. The constitution was what the ancient Romans had to keep each
other in check with a set of laws called the 12 tables, or otherwise the constitution.
Also the thought of laws to protect each other is an idea that originated in ancient
Roman times.
Language
In ancient Rome you will need to know how to speak Latin if you ever
planning on staying alive while there. Noone knows english or any other
languages so… You must know more about Latin so I am going to tell you
about the language so you can get a background image of what should be
happening. Also if you know the language you can speak to locals to get
to take you to the colosseum! If you want to have some food then you need
to be able to speak the language.
Latin is the only language you need to know in ancient Rome. Many
languages today are based on it and there are many words that have latin
roots but we can’t see them. I will give you some examples of these words
in English then tell you the latin root word. For example the word villa in
latin means house. In English, it means large country residence. Another
word is obscura. This means black. And if you don’t know what obscure
means, it means not discovered. You know what the color black is like.
OBSCURE. You don’t know much about black because it is so lifeless.
See the connection there? English has many similarities to the language
Latin because it is based on it. You know everytime you see in a dictionary
the words latin root? Well that means that the word that it is describing is
based on a latin word.
