Appeals in “A Modest Proposal” THREE PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES Logical Appeals The use of facts and statistics to support a position. Find 2 examples in the text and discuss. Emotional Appeals The use of words that arouse strong feelings in readers to help play into emotions and encourage support for a position. Find 2 examples in the text and discuss. Ethical Appeals Passages that establish a writers qualifications or sincerity to support a position. Find 2 examples in the text and discuss. In-Class Paired Writing Project Find a partner. Together complete these steps: Step one – brainstorming. You will be working together to identify and propose an absurd idea for solving problems you see in today’s educational system. Discuss and decide on one proposal. Step two – planning. Develop at least six points that support your proposal. You must incorporate at least one logical appeal, one emotional appeal, and one ethical appeal. Step three – writing. Together you need to write a page summarizing your proposal (introduction) and your six points of support. Step four – presenting. You will be presenting your proposal tomorrow to the class.
