Participles A participle is a form of a verb that acts as an adjective. There
are two kinds of participles:
present participles and past participles.
Past Participles

A smiling pupil received an award. I can repair the broken watch.
Finished, we left for home.
Jogging, he reached a park.
Verb or Participle?
Verb phrases and participles are sometimes confused. When a participle comes
after a helping verb it is part of a verb phrase. A participle used as an adjective stands by itself and
modifies a noun or pronoun.

Bill is our elected captain.
