Wrekin View Primary School & Nursery Curriculum Newsletter Year 3 3A Mrs Kubiak, Mrs Parkes & Mrs Jarvis 3B Miss Kendrick & Mrs Latuszek Summer 2015 China Year 3 Essential Knowledge By the end of this unit children will know... • Use different sources of research e.g. books, pictures, artefacts, internet to find out about China and the Shang Dynasty • Describe and understand the similarities and differences between China and the UK. • Use appropriate historical terms such as dates, time period, era, change, chronology etc. • Use maps, atlases and globes to name and locate countries and cities of the world. • Know where to place the Ancient civilization of the Shang Dynasty in time. • Describe the legacy of the Ancient Shang civilization. Launch Explore Energise Celebrate Visits and experiences Explore the Shang Dynasty Energising session Come and Share Afternoon Hold a China workshop outside of school. Children to experience activities such as: Explore and answer questions such as: When was the Shang Dynasty? Design and make Chinese inspired clay dragons. Invite parents and carers into school for a celebration event (an assembly) Chinese writing Fan dance and Lion dance Chinese food Kungfu Where was the Shang Dynasty? What did they believe in? What did they look like? What did they leave behind? Year 3 present ‘Our learning on China and the Shang Dynasty’ Core Subjects: China Year 3: Theme Content Links to theme English • Write recipes and instructions. • Children are to write their own version of a moral story. • Write a travel guide for visiting China. • Write descriptions of everyday life. Mathematics • • Calculate time differences UK and China Investigate and solve Lo Shu Magic squares. Personal Development Foundation Subjects Spiritual History, Geography and Citizenship Children will have a sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and China. Moral Children will show an interest in investigating, and offering reasoned views about, moral and ethical issues concerning China and the Shang Dynasty. Social Children will communicate and negotiate with others through their collaborative learning in pairs and small groups. History: • To research the Ancient civilisation of the Shang Dynasty (1766 BC to 1046BC). • To evaluate the legacy of the Shang Dynasty. Geography: • Map Skills – Locating cities and countries of the world. • Compare the UK and China. Citizenship: • To learn about the system of education and schooling in China. Art and Design and Design Technology • Design and make a Chinese clay dragon. • Prepare and cook Chinese food. Cultural Science • Moving and growing. Children will be willing to participate in, and respond to, for example, artistic, musical, sporting, mathematical, technological, scientific and cultural learning about China and the Shang Dynasty. Music, Languages and Physical Education • Compose and perform music to accompany a Chinese Lion Dance. • Learn the Chinese Lion dance or some Tai Chi. Computing N/A READING MATHS FACTS This term, we expect children to be able to quickly recall: • How often: 5 times a week. • Books are changed: When required. • Multiplication facts for 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times table, and begin to recall facts for 8x table. • Reading Diaries: Need to be brought into school every day. • Mental addition and subtraction of 2 digit numbers. POWER PROJECTS At the start of each half term, your child will bring home a selection of Power Projects. Your teacher will want to see one part of the project complete each week. This will be handed in on the Tuesday of every week. PE Athletics – Pupils will be outdoors on the field for these sessions so will need sensible outdoor footwear, black shorts and white t-shirt. Dodgeball Tournament – Pupils will be taking part in an ongoing dodgeball tournament Wednesdays and will need sensible indoor footwear, black shorts and white t-shirt. *Please make sure PE kits are in school the full week as these lessons may change to alternate days. Spelling/Grammar focus Spellings will be sent home every Friday and will be found in pupils’ reading diaries. Spelling tests will take place in school the following Friday, so pupils will have a full week to practice.
