Rules for Adding Integers:
 If the integers have the same sign you ADD the numbers (based on absolute value)
together and keep the sign.
 If the integers have different signs you SUBTRACT the numbers (based on absolute
value) and take the sign of the number with the larger absolute value.
Examples:
1) -6 + (-4) = -10
2) 4 + (-6) = -2
3) 4 + 6 = 10
4) -4 + 6 =
Rules for Subtracting Integers:
Keep, Change, Change – (Adding the Opposite)
Example: -12 – 4 = -12 + (-4) = -16
 Keep -12 the same
 Change the subtraction sign to an addition sign
 Change the positive 4 to a -4
 Follow the rules for adding integers
Example 2: -12 – (-4) = -12 + 4 = -8
Rules for Multiplying and Dividing Integers:
 If the integers have the same signs then you perform the operation (multiply or divide)
and the answer will be positive
o Example: -5 · -10 = 50
o Example 2: -10 ÷ -5 = 2
 If the integers have different signs then you perform the operation (multiply or divide)
and the answer will be negative
o Example: -5 · 10 = -50
o Example 2: 10 ÷ -5 = -2
