Rules for Adding Integers: If the integers have the same sign you ADD the numbers (based on absolute value) together and keep the sign. If the integers have different signs you SUBTRACT the numbers (based on absolute value) and take the sign of the number with the larger absolute value. Examples: 1) -6 + (-4) = -10 2) 4 + (-6) = -2 3) 4 + 6 = 10 4) -4 + 6 = Rules for Subtracting Integers: Keep, Change, Change – (Adding the Opposite) Example: -12 – 4 = -12 + (-4) = -16 Keep -12 the same Change the subtraction sign to an addition sign Change the positive 4 to a -4 Follow the rules for adding integers Example 2: -12 – (-4) = -12 + 4 = -8 Rules for Multiplying and Dividing Integers: If the integers have the same signs then you perform the operation (multiply or divide) and the answer will be positive o Example: -5 · -10 = 50 o Example 2: -10 ÷ -5 = 2 If the integers have different signs then you perform the operation (multiply or divide) and the answer will be negative o Example: -5 · 10 = -50 o Example 2: 10 ÷ -5 = -2 “SAME SIGNS POSITIVE – DIFFERENT SIGNS NEGATIVE” Rules for Adding Integers: If the integers have the same sign you ADD the numbers (based on absolute value) together and keep the sign.
