Imagine that you are a student from Holland studying law at the university of Bologna, Italy. Life in Italy is so exciting! You have met artist and writers and learned so much about art and literature. You can hardly wait to tell people at home about everything you have learned. But…a lawyer in Bologna has offered you a chance to stay and work in Italy. Will you stay in Italy or return to Holland? I can describe how changes during the Renaissance affect me today. •SPI : 7.48 Outline the advances made in literature, the arts, science, mathematics, cartography, engineering, and the understanding of human anatomy and astronomy, including Leonardo da Vinci (Last Supper, Mona Lisa), Michelangelo (Sistine Chapel, The David), Johann Gutenberg, and William Shakespeare. • Some Renaissance scientist thought mathematics could help them understand the universe. They studied ancient math text and built on the ideas. They created many symbols such as: • Square root • Positive • Negative • Advances in mathematics led to advances in other fields of science. Engineers and architects, for example, used new mathematical formulas to design ways to strengthen buildings . • Other scientist wanted to know more about the sky and what was in it. They studied astronomy. They learned that the earth revolves around the sun! • Students continued to study religious subjects, but they learned about humanities as well. History was also becoming very important. The famous renaissance scholar Petrarch warned against ignoring history: • “O inglorious age! That scorns antiquity, its mother, to whom it owes every noble art…What can be said in defense of men of education who ought not to be ignorant of anquity (ancient times) and yet are plunged in…darkness and delusion – Petrarch, from a 1366 letter to Boccaccio • Petrarch’s ideas would affect education for many years? How do you think it affected education? THINK: What is Humanism? • Did you know Petrarch is consider the founder of Humanism? • Cartography is map making. During the Renaissance, papermaking came from China and so did print! This allowed the maps to be more accurate. • Italian painter, draftsman, sculptor, architect, and engineer whose genius, perhaps more than that of any other figure, epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. His Last Supper (1495–98) and Mona Lisa (c. 1503–06) are among the most widely popular and influential paintings of the Renaissance. His notebooks reveal a spirit of scientific inquiry and a mechanical inventiveness that were centuries ahead of their time. Leonardo de Vinci’s “The Last Supper” shows Jesus and his disciples. Notice the 3D background that gives the picture depth and dimension. These drawings from Leonardo de Vinci’s journals showcase his inventions and engineering masterpieces. • Michelangelo (1475-1564) was a sculptor, painter and architect widely considered to be one of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance period—and arguably of all time. His work demonstrated a blend of psychological insight, physical realism and intensity never before seen. His contemporaries recognized his extraordinary talent, and Michelangelo received commissions from some of the most wealthy and powerful men of his day, including popes and others affiliated with the Catholic Church. His resulting work, most notably his Pietà and David sculptures and Sistine Chapel ceiling paintings, has been carefully tended and preserved, ensuring that future generations would be able to view and appreciate Michelangelo’s genius. The art work during the Renaissance used realism which made people and objects looks 3D and very realistic. • William Shakespeare was one of the greatest literary influences of all time. Many consider him the greatest play writer of all time. His plays are still very popular around the world. • Romeo and Juliet • Macbeth • Julius Caesar • Hamlet 1. Why was Da Vinci significant during the Renaissance? 2. What works of art did Michelangelo paint? Why do you think this was so brilliant back then and now? 3. How did the Renaissance influence education and cartography? 4. Create a one sentence summary of what you have learned today. Gutenberg English Theatre Artists LIST 4 BULLET POINTS ABOUT EACH PERSON & DRAW 1 IMAGE POWTIDE ON THE BACK: Choose 1 of the 3 Renaissance men and explain why you believe they had the greatest impact on the Renaissance and the world. 1. Identify two ways the Renaissance has affected you today. 2. Describe Michelangelo and DaVinci’s greatest works!
