CONNER: Marketing is defined as the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods and services, to create exchanges that satisfy the individual and the organization. DYLAN: What is IMC? BRITTANY: IMC stands for Integrated Marketing Communications. It is defined as a strategic business process used to develop, execute, and evaluate coordinated, measurable, persuasive brand communications programs over time with consumers, customers, prospects, employees, associates, and other targeted relevant external and internal audiences. It focuses on the synergistic role of advertising, sales promotion, direct marketing, internet and interactive media, and public relations. Slide: Fun fact: Did you know that the average Americans is exposed to over 3000 marketing messages per day? DYLAN: So where can I go to learn more about the marketing and IMC majors? CONNER: So this is the business administration building and this is the business advising center. The first step would be to check into the computer. Afterwards, you will be seen by a business advisor. Here at the business advising center, you can get information about your major, help with grades, gpa requirements, and graduation information. HEATHER: Ok, well we can help you with any questions you have with your major for lower division or upper division. And we have walk-in hours so you can come in any time we’re open whatever fits into your schedule. DYLAN: Ok great. If I have any questions I will be sure to come back. HEATHER: Great. BRITTANY: So now that Conner showed you the Business Advising Center, I think I am going to take you over here to Career Services and show you another resource on campus. DYLAN: Ok cool. Sounds good. Brittany: Let’s go. So here we are inside Career Services. Now like the board says Career Services is a great place to check out future careers options, check out current internships, take personality tests to figure out which one’s right for you, and even practice interviewing. DYLAN: Awesome! BRITTANY: Overall, Career Services is a great resource for business students. Slide: A large list of marketing and IMC jobs DYLAN: Are there any organizations geared towards marketing that I can get involved with on campus? BRITTANY: Yes! The American Marketing Association is a fantastic organization to get involved with! We are open to all majors but it is especially beneficial to marketing and IMC majors. CONNER: Each week we have a speaker come and speak about how they got involved in marketing, talk about their profession and give general advice to our members. Brittany: There are numerous opportunities to meet people, not only here at San Diego State, but in the professional business world. Come enjoy some great food, and help out your community, build your resume, and gain professional experience. Slide: One year later…Dylan is on the Executive Board of the American Marketing Association and has an internship DYLAN: Hey thanks for all the advice Conner and Brittany! I chose the IMC major and I think it’s going to be a really good fit for me! I can’t believe I’m on the executive board of AMA and it has really opened up a lot of doors for me. I get to work in La Jolla as part of an internship and I do marketing and advertising. I have learned so much and I have met so many successful and insightful people and I am having a lot of fun! I would definitely recommend getting involved and getting an internship to all the students out there no matter what major you are. BRITTANY: So whether you choose Marketing or IMC, both offer a great framework to what marketing is and what it entails. CONNER: Both Marketing and IMC are great majors within the College of Business at SDSU. DYLAN: So we hope this video has helped clarify your understanding of the marketing program.
