“Alien Activity” on my website….find the
ordered pair where each space invader is
located
1/23/2015 7-1 D Function Rules
• sequence: a list of numbers in specific order
Examples:
1,2,3,4,5
10,9,8,7,6
5,10,15,20,25
• term: each number in a list
• Arithmetic sequence: sequences that terms
can be found by adding the SAME number to
the previous term
Each month, you choose 3 new DVDs from a DVD
club.

Helpful Hint
Look for a relationship between the 1st
term and the 2nd term. Check if this
relationship works between the 2nd term
and the 3rd term, and so on.
Ex. 1
Identify a pattern in each sequence and then
find the missing terms.

So 24, 18, and 12 will be the next three terms.

61 and 74 will be the next terms in the arithmetic
sequence.
*Not all sequences
are arithmetic.
Ex. 3
Identify a pattern in the sequence. Name the
missing terms.

Ex. 4
Notice that the value of each term is 7 times its position
number. The value of the term in position n is 7n.
Now find the value of the tenth term.
7n = 7 ● 10
= 70
Replace n with 10.
Multiply.
The value of the tenth term in the sequence is 70.
Ex. 5
There are 60 seconds in 1 minute. Construct a table and
write an algebraic expression relating the number of
seconds to the number of minutes. Then find how many
seconds it takes Shaila to walk to school if it takes her
9 minutes.
First construct the table.
It takes Shaila 540 seconds to walk to school.
Identify a pattern in each sequence, and
then find the missing terms.
1. 12, 24, 36, 48,
,
,
, … add 12; 60, 72, 84
2. 75, 71, 67, 63,
,
,
,… subtract 4; 59, 55, 51
Identify a pattern in each sequence. Name
the missing terms.
3. 1000, 500,
4. 100, 50, 200,
, 125,…
, 400,
divide by 2; 250
divide by 2 and
,… multiply by 4; 100, 200
