The Renaissance
Facts Dealing with the Renaissance
1.
The term “renaissance” means “rebirth”, and was a time
period from around 1300 to 1600.
2.
The Renaissance started in Italy and soon began to spread
throughout Europe.
3.
Scholars, or specialists in learning, became very interested in
the writings of the Greeks and Romans.
4.
The Renaissance first appears in the city-states of Italy, first
appearing in the city of Florence.
Other city-states of the Renaissance included: Rome, Venice,
Genoa, Milan, and Pisa.
Renaissance Terms
1.
Humanism- the Renaissance movement based on the
literature and ideas of ancient Rome and Greece. Humanists
opened schools, as they believed education could help
improve themselves.
2.
Individualism- an emphasis on the dignity and worth of the
individual person.
3.
Italy consisted of individual city-states, each had their own
government during the Renaissance.
4.
Some city-states selected political leaders called signori to
maintain control.
5.
One of the most famous families was the Medici family, a
wealthy banking family who controlled Florence for about
300 years.
The Northern Renaissance
1.
The Renaissance spread throughout Europe because of many
Italian artists traveling to other countries. Ideas soon began
spreading into countries such as France, England, and the
Netherlands from Italy.
2.
During this time, movable type printing was developed in
Germany. The first book printed was the Bible in 1455 by
Johann Gutenberg. This helped ideas spread much quicker.
The French Renaissance
1.
French architects created chateaux’s, or castles.
The French Renaissance also saw short written works by
many different writers.
(Ex. Ronsard and Montaign)
The English Renaissance
1.
Ideas spread into England around 1485.
2.
King Henry VII invited Renaissance scholars to England to
share new ideas.
3.
Important writers who appeared in England included:
William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, and Thomas
More.
