Internal Medicine Goals and Objectives INFECTIOUS DISEASE ROTATION A: Medical Expert 1. To demonstrate knowledge of common infectious diseases encountered on the ID service. 2. To demonstrate appropriate history taking and examination skills for patients presenting with Infectious Diseases including general Internal Medicine (i.e. signs of chronic liver disease in patients presenting with chronic Hepatitis C) 3. To formulate a patient based problem list and differential diagnosis. 4. To summarize the pertinent investigations and microbiologic results. 5. To formulate a management strategy using appropriate antimicrobial therapy. 6. To demonstrate proficiency in the interpretation of investigations (i.e. gram stain, tuberculin skin testing, lumbar puncture etc.) 7. To model and understand the principles of Infection Control (hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, isolation etc) B: Communicator 1. To present and discuss their recommendations in a consultative note or letter for the referring physician. 2. To present cases for discussion at clinical rounds in a succinct and clear fashion. 3. To perform an accurate and complete clinical assessment and record the findings in a readable and organized fashion. 4. To demonstrate good interpersonal skills with patients and families. C: Collaborator 1. To work collaboratively with the microbiology staff, pharmacy staff, primary referring teams and other allied health professionals D: Manager 1. To demonstrate an organized and cost effective use of investigations and antimicrobials 2. Demonstrate efficient and effective time management skills E: Health Advocate 1. To recognize the importance of using antibiotics appropriately to reduce the emergence of antibiotic resistance. 2. To identify important strategies to prevent infectious diseases. 3. Understand the role of Infection Control in the health care environment. 4. To demonstrate advocacy for patients. F: Scholar 1. Demonstrate evidence of reading and utilizing the literature pertaining to infectious diseases. 2. Demonstrate evidence of teaching/educating consulting services and team members. 3. Participate in ID presentations 1 G: Professional 1. Demonstrate professional behavior with all interactions with team members, staff and patients. 2. Appropriate attendance and punctuality at clinical rounds, meetings, clinics. 3. Demonstrate an awareness of one’s owns limitations, and seeks help or advice when needed. 2
