James M. Hughes, M.D., is Professor of Medicine and Public Health at Emory University and Co-Director of the
Emory Antibiotic Resistance Center. Prior to joining Emory, he worked for the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), initially as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer and ultimately as Director of the
National Center for Infectious Diseases from 1992-2005. Dr. Hughes received his M.D. degree from Stanford
University and trained in internal medicine at the University of Washington, infectious diseases at the University of
Virginia, and preventive medicine at CDC. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), ViceChair of the NAM Forum on Microbial Threats, and a past president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America
(IDSA). He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society of
Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, American Academy of Microbiology (AAM), and IDSA. He also serves as a
member of the Board of Governors of AAM and Board of Directors of the EcoHealth Alliance. His areas of
interest include emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, vectorborne and zoonotic diseases, strategies
for improving adolescent immunization coverage, and policies and practices for preventing, rapidly detecting, and
responding to emerging diseases.
