Definition of Chicken Pox
• Common, extremely infectious childhood
disease
• Produces a red, itchy, blistery rash.
• Also known as varicella.
• Caused by a virus called varicella-zoster.
• You know you have chicken pox if you feel
weak, have itchy rashes or blisters, and have a
headache.
Spreading of Chicken Pox
• Chicken Pox is spread by touch.
• Touching the rashes or blisters of an infected.
• Close contact with mucus/saliva of an
infected.
• Chicken Pox is spread through the air.
• Spread by coughing or sneezing.

Who is Most Susceptible to Chicken
Pox?
• Children (under 12)
• People with immune system disorders or poor
health
• People who have gotten chicken pox before
are immune to chicken pox.
Symptoms of Chicken Pox

Headaches.
Fever.
Stomachache.
Sore throat.
Treatment for Chickenpox
• Treated by “Acyclovir”.
• Prevented by vaccination.
• Vaccination is where dead/weakened viruses
are injected into the bloodstream.
• This causes the body to create antibodies for
the virus.
• After vaccination, you will become immune to
the virus.
History of Chicken Pox
• Started more than 2,000 years ago in
Babylonia.
• Identified by a Persian scientist called
Muhammad ibn Zakariya Razi in 800 AD.
