Discoveries & ‘firsts’ of the Magellan expedition:
1st to circumnavigate the globe
1st to go around South America, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans
1st Europeans to observe these new animals: "camels without humps (llama &
alpaca), “black geese" which had to be skinned instead of plucked (penguins)
1st Europeans to find new galaxies only visible from the Southern Hemisphere
1st to approximately measure the size of the Earth: over 43,000 miles
1st to realize the need for an international dateline. When they arrived back in
Spain, they realized that they were a day off the calendar from everyone else. This
phenomenon caused great excitement at the time, to the extent that a special
delegation was sent to the Pope to explain it to him.
