Origins (Beginnings)

pork or pork products; no
shell fish
• Bar/Bat Mitzvah –
Rites of Passage: At 13 (12
for girls) children are seen
as adult and must follow the
religious commandments.

in the temple as well.
Holy Day in Judaism
• Hanukkah – Eight day festival honoring Jewish
victory over Greek oppression and the
rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem.
– Jews had only enough oil to light eternal flame one
day, but the flame lasted eight.

• Shabbat – The seventh day
(Saturday). A day of rest.
• Yom Kipper – “Day of Atonement”
day to atone for the sins of the past
year. Involves not working, fasting,
and going to temple.

• Rosh Hashanah – Jewish “New Year”
focus on planning to live your life
better in the next year. (New Years
Resolution).
• Passover – Commemorates the
exodus form Egypt. Jews use this as
a way to have a personal movement
from slavery to freedom.
Jews and Christians
• Judaism is the foundation of
Christianity, but is NOT a part of it
• Jesus was Jewish, as were his followers
and the Apostles
• Jews do not believe that Jesus was the
messiah, but just a good and wise man
who lived and died 2000 years ago –
Jews still await their messiah
• Jews are not concerned about salvation
and the “world to come”
