Torah • Jewish religious scripture • Beginning of world to death of Moses – Moses is the author of the Torah • First five books of the bible – In English: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy Torah (Cont’d) • The Torah contains religious, moral and social law which guides the life of a Jew Other Religious Texts • Talmud (“Oral Law”) – commentary of ancient rabbis that elaborates on how to apply God’s Law in everyday life through: – – – – – Dietary rules (Kosher) Dress and other symbols The Temple and Temple rites Observance of Holy days Proper social relations between male and female, in business, judicial rulings, etc. Basic Beliefs • Judaism is a monotheistic faith so… – Jews believe in ONE God, who created the universe. – goal of all humanity is to live in such a way as to perpetuate the betterment of self and of society – The heart of Judaism is in the home and family, social responsibility and doing Mitzvot (“good deeds” based on God’s commandments) Jewish Life • Kosher – Dietary Law: no mixing of dairy and meat; no pork or pork products; no shell fish • Bar/Bat Mitzvah – Rites of Passage: At 13 (12 for girls) children are seen as adult and must follow the religious commandments. – They can also take lead roles in the temple as well. Holy Day in Judaism • Hanukkah – Eight day festival honoring Jewish victory over Greek oppression and the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. – Jews had only enough oil to light eternal flame one day, but the flame lasted eight. Holy Days (Cont’d) • Shabbat – The seventh day (Saturday). A day of rest. • Yom Kipper – “Day of Atonement” day to atone for the sins of the past year. Involves not working, fasting, and going to temple. Holy Days (Cont’d) • Rosh Hashanah – Jewish “New Year” focus on planning to live your life better in the next year. (New Years Resolution). • Passover – Commemorates the exodus form Egypt. Jews use this as a way to have a personal movement from slavery to freedom.
