Niche, Habitat, and Competition
(a) Niche:
Role that a species plays in its ecosystem

each species occupies its own niche

what it does to survive
Ex. bee transports pollen for flowers

(b) Habitat: place an organism lives

each organism has its own habitat

its habitat is where it is best adapted to survive
Ex.

a fish lives in the water because it has gills
habitat include factors that limit the kinds and number of organisms that can live there
Ex. goldfish can only live in fresh water

a single area may satisfy the needs of many kinds of plants and animals

organisms that associate in a common habitat are called a community
Ex.
a freshwater lake community

Competition:

struggle between organisms to survive

exists in every ecosystem

organisms must compete against their own species and different species in order to survive

the stronger organisms have an advantage over those who are weaker
(survival of the fittest)
Mar 13:33 PM

competition arises when organisms share common requirements for survival

the more needs that organisms have in common the more intense the competition
Ex. foxes and coyotes in Newfoundland

when resources become scarce competition increases and could lead to the elimination of species

Intraspecific Competition:

competition between the same species
Ex. crows competing over the same road kill
Interspecific Competition:

competition between different species
Ex. lion and hyena competing over a zebra
NOTE:
when competition occurs those with the most useful adaptations will survive while less adapted will not
