Mixed Numbers
Mixed numbers have a whole number AND a fraction!
Dec 2010:16 AM
Step 1: Write the improper fraction.

Step 2: Divide the numerator by the denominator.

Step 3: The quotient becomes the whole number and the
remainder is put over the denominator.

When finding equivalent fractions, whatever you do to the numerator, you have to do to the denominator!!

To find an equivalent fraction, multiply the
numerator and the denominator by the same
multiplier.

"To Reduce" means to make smaller.
We are going to learn how to make the digits, in the
numerator and denominator of a fraction, smaller, yet the
amount of area they represent stays the same.
2/8=1/4

We can use our multiplication chart to help us reduce the
fractions.
Let's reduce the following fraction.
35
50
Ask yourself, "What row in the multiplication chart has both a 35
and a 50?".
Use the Inside Out Multiplication Chart to find GCF
Jan 3012:45 PM
If ever you get a fraction that you can still find both the numerator
and the denominator in one row of your multiplication chart...do the
steps again with the new numerator and denominator. This is called
Reducing to Lowest Terms.

9.8 Relating Fractions, Mixed Numbers, and Decimals
Dec 185:04 PM
A number can be shown as a fraction and a decimal. To show the numbers in the same way, decide which is easier: writing fractions to decimals or decimals as fractions. Dec 185:05 PM

Fraction to Decimal: Change the denominator to a 10, 100, or 1,000 and write the appropriate decimal number.
Ex. 1 = 5 How would you write 2/10 as a decimal number? Dec 185:11 PM

Important things to remember!
*REDUCE!!

Jan 39:18 AM
Decimal to Fraction: Put the decimal number as a fraction by writing the number in the numerator's place and the place value as the denominator. Reduce if needed. 0.2 = 2

Can 2/10 be reduced? How do you know? Dec 185:11 PM

Compare and Order Fractions and Decimals
Dec 185:14 PM
There are several ways to compare and order fractions. 1.) Find equivalent fractions with a common denominator. 5
6
5
8
Find the LCM of the denominators!
6:
8:

8
Which fraction has the bigger numerator? Dec 185:22 PM
10
ch9secondhalfnotes.notebook
January 07, 2015
2.) Think about a number line!
When the numerators are the same, the fraction with the greater denominator is less than the other fraction. The larger the denominator, the smaller the pieces!
5
6
These numerators are the same!
5
8
Bigger denominator = smaller pieces
Dec 185:26 PM
3.) Think about where a half and a whole would be. Find half of the denominator. 5
6
5
8
Closer to one whole
5 is close to 6. Half of 8 is 4 and 5 is closer to 4 than 8, so 5/8 is closer to 1/2. Dec 185:30 PM
