Converting Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions
Multiply the whole number by the denominator. Add this to the numerator. Write
the new fraction using the original denominator and new numerator.
Converting Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers
Divide the numerator by the denominator. The remainder becomes the numerator and
the denominator remains the same.
42 ÷ 5 = 8 with a remainder of 2
Rule for Multiplication of Fractions
When multiplying fractions, you simply multiply the numerators together and
then multiply the denominators together. Simplify the result.
The fraction 3/14 cannot be simplified any further; it is in its simplest form.
Rule for Division of Fractions
When you divide two fractions, you take the reciprocal of the second fraction and
then multiply. (Taking the reciprocal of a fraction means to flip it over.)
