Parts of Speech ‐ Verbs Name ________________ Date ___________ Verbs are the most important words in a sentence. Most verbs are action words. Task 1: Circle the verbs in the following sentences. They are action verbs. 1. The builder shovelled sand into the cement mixer. 2. Sit down. 3. The painter gave the client a quotation for the job. 4. I work from 8am to 4pm . Forming (writing) the past tense: For most verbs, just add ‘ed’. plaster plastered paint painted If a verb only has one syllable and ends [consonant‐vowel‐consonant], you normally double the final consonant and add ‘ed’. chat chatted stop stopped If a verb ends [consonant‐y], change the ‘y’ to an ‘I’ and add ‘ed’. carry carried supply supplied Task 2: Write the past tense of each verb. 1. brush 2. fix 3. spray 4. copy Extension work Past participles are formed from verbs but can also be used as adjectives or describing words. Task 3: In each sentence circle the past participle that is used as an adjective. 1. I ordered a mixed grill and was served two sausages, a burger and a small steak with chips. 2.
