Yr 10 Autumn Term Topics – Higher (Set 2 Falcon) 1) Integers, Powers & Roots (New AQA Higher Ch 4 & 14) a) Revision of prime, cube, square numbers as well as factors & multiples. b) Use prime factor decomposition of a number & use Venn diagrams to find the HCF & LCM. c) Use index laws e.g 53 x 54 = 59 and 66 ÷ 62=64 (laws of indices is also met in Algebra 1) & calculate with fractional indices e.g 361/2 = √36 d) Recognise powers of 2, 3, 4 & 5 e) Write numbers in standard form. (AQA Ch 15) 2) Angles & Measure (New AQA Higher Ch 9 & Ch 37) a) Know & apply Pythagoras Theorem for finding missing sides in right angled triangles. (extension is Trigonometry) b) Use alternate, corresponding, supplementary & opposite angles in parallel lines. c) Find interior & exterior angles of polygons. E.g 5400 in a pentagon……. d) Find missing sides in similar shapes using scale factors. (a yr 9 objective worth revising) 3) Ratio & Proportion (New AQA Higher Ch 22, 27, 28 & 30-not all of it) a) Revise how to share in a given ratio. b) Revision of solving problems in direct proportion. c) Solve best buy problems d) Solve problems with distance, speed, time (density & pressure will be met in year 11 but is an extension). If time extend to distance, time graphs. HALF TERM 4) Algebra 1 (New AQA Ch 7 & 22) a) Substitute positive & negative integers into Mathematical & Scientific formula. (extend to decimals) b) Multiply double brackets & factorise expressions. E.g factorise 12m – 8n or 18ab + 9a c) Simplify algebraic expressions e.g 6m3 + 2p – 3m3 or ab x bc d) Use the laws of indices e.g simplify 4a2 x 6a3 e) Rearrange formulae e.g y = mx + c make m the subject. 4) Fractions, Decimals & Percentages (New AQA Ch 5, 6, 13 & 40) a) Revision of the 4 rules of fractions. c) Revision of converting between fractions, decimals & percentages with & without a calculator. d) Solve reverse % problems e.g a shirt has 10% off & now costs £56. What was the original price? e) Calculate % change e.g. 1 shirt costs £40 and has been reduced to £30. What is the % reduction in price? f) Calculate with compound interest & depreciation (Chapter 40) TRIAL EXAMS
