Two Types of Reproduction
• Asexual
– Only one parent
– Offspring are identical to parent
• Sexual
– Two parents (egg cell and sperm cell)

Reproduction
• Only one organism is needed to reproduce
• All the offspring are genetically identical to
each other and to the parent organism
• A single organism can produce large numbers
of offspring
Binary Fission
• Parent undergoes cell division to produce
two genetically identical daughter cells or
offspring
• Example: Bacteria
Binary Fission
• Allows for rapid population growth under
ideal conditions
• Bacteria can double population every 20 mins
Budding
• Offspring begin as a small growth on the
parent
• Bud keeps growing (cell division) and
eventually breaks off from parent
• Example: Yeast
Vegetative Reproduction
• Plants that reproduce asexually
• Strawberries send out “runners” that can form
into new plants
Fragmentation
• Small part of an animal breaks off and grows
into a new organism
– Example: Sea Star
Fragmentation
• Parent can regrow lost body part
– Called “Regeneration”
Spore Formation
• Reproduction via forming large numbers of
spores
• Spores = similar to seeds
