Notes on Asexual Reproduction WHAT IS ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION? •It’s the production of offspring by one parent without a sperm and egg joining. •The offspring are genetically identical to the parent! ADVANTAGES OF ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION •It does not require a mate •It takes less time to reproduce offspring. DISADVANTAGES OF ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION •It lacks genetic variation (differences in their genes – which increases the chances for species survival if environment changes. •Mutation or genetic changes can occur which can be harmful. TYPES OF ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION •FISSION: produces two genetically identical cells. Example is bacteria called E.coli. •MITOTIC CELL DIVISION: mitosis followed by cell division which also produces two genetically identical cells. Example is diatom. •BUDDING: new offspring or organism forms on the parent organism which is called a “bud”. Examples are yeasts and hydras •PLANT CUTTINGS: a new plant can grow from a stem cutting. Examples are Poinsettias and Kalanchoe plants. •ANIMAL REGENERATION: produces new animals from pieces of an animal’s body. Example is a sea star (starfish). CLONING
