Mother Natures Biggest Fits By: Haley Cioni and Madison Keegan How many original “supercontinents” did Wegner’s theory include? The theory stated that there was one giant landmass called Pangaea. This supercontinent was all of are continents joined together today. What Plates affect the U.S.? The plates are the North American Plate, Juan De Fuca Plate, Pacific Plate, and if you include Puerto Rico then it would also include the Caribbean Plate. So there are four major plates in all. Why does California have more earthquakes than Florida? What Hazard zone do we live in? Its Because the San Andreas fault runs through much of California, and there are no major fault zones under Florida. We are in the blue. 2-4 hazard. The most destructive earthquake in history!!! It was the Shaanxi earthquake, or Hau County, or Jiajing earthquake was the deadliest earthquake on record. Magnitude= 8 Death Toll= approximately 830,000 people When=it occurred on the morning of January 23, 1556 AD Where= Shaanxi, China. More than 97 counties where affected. Shaanxi, Henan, Gansu, Hedei, Shandong, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, and Anhui were affected. A 520 mile wide area was destroyed and in some counties 60% of the population was killed. Three types of tectonic plate boundary's. Divergent plate boundary-(midocean ridge). Plates are moving away from each other and, new ocean floor is being created. Convergent plate boundary(subduction zones). Plates are moving towards each other, with one plate being pulled/pushed down into the asthenosphere. Transform plate boundary(transform fault). Plates are sliding past each other. What are Tsunamis? Tsunamis are giant and long wave-lengths that are caused by the displacement of water from an earthquake. They usually travel about 500 mph. 2 types of energy waves created with an earthquake. The two types of waves and primary waves (p-waves) and secondary waves (s-waves). Pwaves travel first going through all 3 types of matter (solid, liquid, and gas). While s-waves only travel through solids. S-waves travel slower therefore there called Secondary waves. Primary waves travel faster than Secondary waves. How much more energy is released by a 7.2 earthquake than a 6.2 earthquake? A 7.2 earthquake produces 10 times more ground motion than a magnitude 6.2 earthquake. It releases about 32 times more energy. What applications does seismology have besides measuring the magnitude and location of earthquakes? Reflection and Refraction seismology can be used in geophysical exploration to locate layers of varying density which can be used for example to locate underground hydrocarbons in the oil and gas industry. Seismology has also provided information on the internal structure and state of matter on the interior earth. Earthquakes last week Most Recent Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 7:27:48 a.m. at Epicenter, California This Week Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 1:21:30 p.m. at Epicenter, Southern California Can scientist Predict earthquakes??? No they cannot, but they can predict were earthquakes are likely to hit. They can sometimes predict a short-time increase in probability, but nothing specific like “Putnam County will have a 4.1 earthquake in 4 days”. How do Scientists know where an earthquake actually occurred? When an earthquake happens it sends waves through the ground at a certain speed. The waves will eventually ripple out and hit meters that will detect it. Thanks For Watching!!! Hope You Enjoyed!!!
