What are teeth like?
When you’re young, you first have what are called milk
or baby teeth, which fall out when your new adult teeth
grow. But these new teeth cannot be replaced, so you
must take care of them very well.
Parts of a tooth:
The outside or crown is the part you can see.
The inside or root is the part you can’t see because it’s
inside the bone under your gums.
Parts of a tooth:
Crown
Dentin
Enamel
Dental pulp
Cementum
Root
Parts of a tooth:
The enamel is the outside layer that covers the crown:
• It’s the hardest substance in the human body.
• It protects the tooth from external elements.
Enamel
Parts of a tooth:
The dentin is the main component of the tooth:
• It surrounds the pulp and is protected by the enamel
and cementum.
• It’s harder and more dense than bone.
Dentin
Parts of a tooth:
The dental pulp is the inner part of the tooth, under the
layers of dentin and enamel:
• It’s a soft tissue containing blood vessels and
nerves.
Pulp
Parts of a tooth:
The cementum is a mineralized tissue that covers the
root and helps attach the tooth to the bones in your
jaws.
• It’s a special tissue, similar to bone tissue.
Cementum
Parts of a tooth:
Teeth have different shapes because they are
designed to do different things: grind, chew and
cut.
What is caries?
Caries is an infectious disease that can destroy your
teeth if it is not cured properly.
Caries starts by softening the hard dental tissue
(enamel and cementum) and finally destroys the tooth.
What is caries?
Sugar helps caries develop.
If you eat lots of sweets and cakes, some sugar may
remain between your teeth. The sugar joins forces
with the rest of food and the bacteria we all have in our
mouths, and the caries attack begins.
What is caries?
The bacteria in our mouths feed on sugar and soft food,
etc. They break down the food and produce acids, which
directly attack the enamel on your teeth.
To prevent caries from appearing, you must clean your
teeth after every meal and not eat too many sweets.
How to clean your teeth
If you clean your teeth with a
toothbrush and gel after every meal
and follow our tips, your teeth will
stay clean and healthy
How to clean your teeth
Make sure your toothbrush is in good condition, and remember not to
wet it under the tap before starting to brush your teeth. Brush your
teeth using up-and-down strokes, from your gums to the tips of your
teeth.
How to clean your teeth
Don’t leave a single
corner unbrushed,
and remember to
brush the backs of
your teeth, too!
How to clean your teeth
Gently brush your
gums to stop
bacteria forming
and to clean your
mouth really well
How to clean your teeth
End by brushing
the tips of your
teeth with side-toside strokes
How to clean your teeth
The best kinds of food for your
teeth are the ones that are low
in sugar and contain a lot of
fibre, because chewing them
helps clean your teeth.
How to clean your teeth
