The Greeks called them Philosophers which means ‘lovers of wisdom’. Perfection and Balance in Philosophy Socrates • Socratic Questioning – allows student to arrive at own conclusions by asking questions! – He would ask students a series of leading questions to show that people hold many contradictory opinions. • Socrates had a goal of realizing perfect and ethical human behavior and teaching that to his students. Socrates on Trial • Charged with corrupting the youth and neglecting the cities gods. • The outcome of the trial was voted on (what city was the trial likely in??) – The verdict???? – Death by drinking hemlocka slow acting poison Plato • A student of Socrates – denounced democracy because of the death of Socrates – left Greece after Socrates death. • Wrote The Republic- were he set forth his vision of a perfectly governed society. – A philosopher king • Established first institution of higher learning called the Academy, in 387 BCE. Aristotle • A student at Plato’s Academy • Tutored Alexander the Great (Macedonian King) • Perfect human path = moderation • “golden mean” – desirable goal between two extremes (one being excess the other being deficiency) Perfection and Balance in Architecture • Greeks were the first to use advanced math to construct Columns & Arches for their buildings. Pericles’ (ruler of Athens during the Golden Age), goal was to have the greatest artists and architects, create magnificent sculptures and buildings, to glorify Athens. He had them build Temples dedicated to gods and goddesses Parthenon- built to honor Athena.
