This causes mounts to develop. Mantle: The mantle goes around the core and is solid. It comprises most of the earth’s mass. The temperature is about 1000° C. Continental drift: A theory that the continents moved across the earth’s surface Oceanic crust: The crust underlying the ocean basin. This layer is much thinner than the earth’s continental crust and is young. Crust: The outermost shell of the earth Ocean trenches: Long but narrow topographic depressions of the sea floor. They are also the deepest parts of the ocean. Divergent plates: A tectonic boundary where two plates are moving away from each other and new crust is forming from magma that rises to the Earth’s surface between the two Earthquake: A sudden movement of the earth’s crust caused by the release of stress accumulated along geologic faults or by volcanic activity Erosion: The mechanical process of wearing or grinding something down (as by particles washing over it) Eruption: When ash and lava flows and gases are ejected from deep within the earth Fault: An area of stress in the earth where broken rocks slide past each other, causing a crack in the Earth’s surface Igneous rock: Rock that is formed when magma cools and hardens Pangea: A supercontinent that existed 250 million years ago which included most of the earth’s continental landmasses Plates: The earth’s surface is broken into seven large and many small moving plates, each about 50 miles thick. They move relative to one another an average of a few inches a year or about as fast as fingernails grow. Plate Tectonics: The term for the field of study of large scale motions of the earth’s lithosphere. Subduction: When one plate is forced beneath another into the mantle and eventually undergoes partial melting Transform plates: A boundary at which one lithosphere plate slips laterally past another (This causes earthquakes) Volcano: A vent in the crust of the Earth or another planet from which usually molten rock, ash and steam are ejected Lava: What magma is called when it reaches the surface of the earth http://www.WesternReservePublicMedia.org/EarthMotion3
