“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are
endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life,
Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are
instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That
whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of
the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute a new Government, laying its
foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall
seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Part B: Excerpt from the
Constitution
“New States may be admitted by the
Congress into this Union; but no
new State shall be formed or erected
within the Jurisdiction of any other
State; nor any State be formed by
the Junction of two or more States,
or Parts of States, without the
Consent of the Legislatures of the
States concerned as well as of the Congress. The Congress shall have Power to
dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or
other Property belonging to the United States; and nothing in this Constitution
shall be so construed as to Prejudice any Claims of the United States, or of any
particular State.”
Justification for Secession: The Ordinances of Secession of South Carolina
Part C: Excerpt from the Ordinances of Secession of South Carolina
“We, the people of the State of South Carolina, in convention assembled, do
declare and ordain . . . That the ordinance adopted by us in convention on the
twenty-third day of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and
eighty-eight, whereby the Constitution of the United States of America was
ratified, and also all acts . . . are hereby repealed; and that the union now subsisting
between South Carolina and other States, under the name of the "United States of
America," is hereby dissolved.”
