Unit 5: Worksheet 4
Newton's 2nd Law and Component Forces
REMEMBER- when dealing with objects on inclined planes, always tilt your axis so the x-axis is
parallel to the slope and the y-axis is perpendicular to the slope.
Fg is going to have to be split into its components- always draw the perpendicular component first
so the angle of the slope is the same as the angle between Fg and Fgy
A rollercoaster car, 300 kg with passengers, accelerates down a 65° hill. We will assume that friction
is small enough that it can be ignored. What is the acceleration of the rollercoaster down the hill?
Make a quantitative force diagram. Write a net force equation for the axis along which forces
are not balanced.
2. A worker pushes a 7 kg shipping box along a rollered track. Assume friction is small enough to be
ignored because of the rollers. The worker's push is 25 N directed down and to the right at an angle of
20°. Make a quantitative force diagram. Write a net force equation for the axis along which forces
are not balanced.
a. Determine the acceleration of the block.
b. Determine the normal force on the block.
3. A 70 kg box is pulled by a 400 N force at an angle of 30° to the horizontal. The force of kinetic friction is
75 N. Determine the acceleration of the box. Make a quantitative force diagram. Write a net force
equation for the axis along which forces are not balanced.
4. A 20 kg mass is allowed to accelerate down a frictionless 15° ramp. What is the acceleration of the
block down the ramp? Make a quantitative force diagram. Write a net force equation for the axis
along which forces are not balanced.
5. A block is being pulled up a ramp as shown in the diagram below. Assume that the frictional force
acting on the block on the ramp is 25.0 N. What is the acceleration of the block? Make a quantitative
force diagram. Write a net force equation for the axis along which forces are not balanced.
