FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARDS GUIDELINES FOR 2015
Terms and Conditions
The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) Student Leadership Award recognises undergraduate or postgraduate
(coursework or research) students who have demonstrated sustained, outstanding leadership in one of the
following categories during the period of their enrolment in the Faculty of Health Science. Awards may be made
to individuals or teams of students:

Student leadership in The University of Sydney
2
Student leadership in the Faculty of Health Sciences
3
Student leadership in their Discipline or profession
4
Student leadership on a health related community issue
Criteria
The nominee will have engaged in leadership activities that further the goals and values of The University
of Sydney, while enrolled as a student at the Faculty of Health Sciences and have maintained satisfactory
academic progression during the leadership period.
Students or student teams may nominate themselves or be nominated by a peer or academic staff member.
Nominations must address the following criteria:

Description of the leadership activities undertaken by the nominee(s) (for team applications, a brief
explanation of the role of each group member will need to be provided)

Evidence of the impact and outcome of their leadership

Description of the nominees’ approach to leadership and evidence of inclusive leadership practices

Evidence of succession and sustainability planning
Process
The faculty is now calling for nominations for the 2015 FHS Student Leadership Awards. Nominations will
close at midnight March 27th 2016. Awardees will be notified in April 2016. Up to 2 awards will be made. The
Award will be formally presented at the faculty’s annual awards and scholarship ceremony on May 26th 2016.
Nominations will be judged by a panel consisting of 2 nominated faculty academic staff members, one
invited academic staff member from outside the faculty and two student representatives from the FHS
Student Staff Consultative Committee. The panel will be chaired by the A/Dean Learning and Teaching.
The Award
Each successful student or student team will receive a certificate and $1,000. Awardees will be invited to
address future student groups and engage in alumni activities. Successful awardees must be willing to be
profiled in Faculty and University publications and websites and to share their experiences with current
students and staff.

hold a leadership position, this should be above and beyond your leadership activities in this
position (20%). (400 word limit for individual applicant/nominee. In addition to the 400 words, group
applications/nominations must provide 1-2 sentences on the leadership contribution of each group
member).

2. Evidence of the impact and outcome of leadership activity (30%) (400 word limit)
(Evidence may include, but is not limited to, activities such as: implementing or influencing student
policies and outcomes that enhance the student experience across campuses; introducing initiatives
that benefit students; community-based activities and outcomes).

3. Description of the applicant/nominee approach to leadership and evidence of inclusive
leadership practices (30%) (400 word limit)
(Description may include, but is not limited to, leadership type - eg, achievement oriented, modelling
best practice, democratic. Evidence of inclusive leadership focuses on how you demonstrated your
leadership and the strategies used to ensure that it was inclusive).

4. Evidence of succession and sustainability planning (20%) (400 word limit)
(Evidence can include but is not limited to: encouragement of others to become leaders; sharing
knowledge with team members to allow them to become future leaders; putting structure and guidelines
in place for others to follow; building a network of contacts).
