Reproductive Systems 1. Male Reproductive System A. Structure and Function 1} Sperm- male reproductive cells 2} Testes (aka testicles) – two small glands that produce sperm 3} Scrotum – external skin sac that protect the testes 4} Penis – tube-shaped organ that extends from the trunk of the body just above the testes 5} Semen – thick fluid containing sperm and other secretions from the male reproductive system 6} Epididymis – the tubes in each testis join the epididymis, a larger coiled tube where sperm mature and are stored. 7} Vas Deferens – tubes that extend from each epididymis to the urethra. 8} Seminal Vesicle – as sperm move through the vas deferens, they are combined with a nourishing fluid produced by the seminal vesicles 9} Prostate Gland – secretions from the prostate gland combine with the spermcontaining fluid to form semen 10}Urethra – passageway through which both semen and urine leave the male body B. Structure and Function 1} Ovaries – female sex glands that store the ova and produce female sex hormones 2} Ovulation – process of releasing a mature ovum into the fallopian tube each month 3} Fallopian Tubes – pair of tubes with fingerlike projections that draw in the ovum 4} Uterus – female organ that protects and nourishes a developing fetus 5} Cervix – opening of the uterus 6} Vagina – muscular, elastic passageway that extends from the uterus to the outside of the body 7} Clitoris- is a highly sensitive part of the female body. Its function is to provide sexual pleasure. 8} Vulva- Keeps foreign materials out of the vagina. 9} Anus- Opening for the rectum. Is not part of the vulva, opening for the colon 10} Urethra- allows urine to exit the body B.
