HW: reproduction assignment
4/30 Objective
 Discuss the structures of the reproductive system
influence the human body’s ability to reproduce and
maintain homeostasis
What is the
Reproductive System?
A combination of body
structures and organs that
allow humans to make
babies.
Key Point #1: Function
To produce another of your own kind
Chickens lay little chicks.
Lambs have baby lambs.
Goats have kids.
Dolphins have little dolphins.
Big trees have little plants.
Key Point #2: Sex Cells
 Males: Sperm
 Females: Eggs
•Men continue to produce new sperm
•Female have a certain amount of eggs
stored in the ovaries since birth!
cells throughout their entire life
•There are about 3,000 eggs!!!
Swimming for your life
 A sperm is a tiny package with a big responsibility –
 Key Point #3: sperm fertilize the egg and create human life
 It takes ONE sperm to fertilize an egg
 So that tiny package is loaded with “gear” for its important journey.
 How many sperm does it take to fertilize an egg?
A few facts:
 Daily sperm production by a healthy man:
10 million to 50 million
 Contents of average ejaculation:
200 million sperm; 120 million moving; 80 million deformed
 Maturation: 72 days
 Survival time in a woman: 2 to 7 days
Male Reproductive System
5 Basic Parts
4. Prostate
3. Vans Deferens
5. Urethra
6. Penis
1. Scrotum
2. Testicles (testes)
Male Reproductive System – Scrotum
1. Scrotum
• Contains the testes
• Controls
temperature for
sperm production
Male Reproductive System – Testes (testicles)
2. Testicles
• Produces sperm
Male Reproductive System –Vans
Deferens
• 3.Vans
Deferens• Tube from testes
to prostate
Male Reproductive System – Prostate
gland
• 4.Prostate
gland • makes semen
that help sperm
move
Male Reproductive System – Urethra
5. Urethra
-Connects bladder
AND the vas
deferens to the
penis
- carries urine OR
sperm
Male Reproductive System – Penis
6.
Penis
• Organ with muscle
• Pushes urine OR
semen out of body
Quick Freeze
 What is a vasectomy?
 The cutting of the Vans Deferens so sperm cannot
travel to the prostate and out of the body.
“Permenant” birth control.
Female Reproductive System
5 Basic Parts
Female Reproductive System - Ovary
1.Ovary
• Stores and
releases
eggs
• There are
two ovaries
•Female get a certain amount of eggs
stored in the ovaries since birth!
•There are about 3,000 eggs!!!
Female Reproductive System
– Fallopian
Tube
2. Fallopian
tube
• Pathway from
the ovaries to
the uterus
Joining of egg and
sperm
Key Point #4: Fertilization takes place in the
fallopian tube.
Female Reproductive System - Uterus
3. Uterus
• Fertilized
egg grows
here
Female Reproductive System - Cervix
Cervix
• The “doorway” to
the uterus
• Made of strong
muscles that the
baby passes
through during
delivery
Female Reproductive System - Vagina
4. Vagina
• Muscular path
from uterus to
the outside
Tell me what ya know!
Female Body System
 What is the tube that eggs travel through in order to
reach the uterus
 Fallopian Tubes
Female Body System
 Woman have 2 of these…
 They store and release eggs
 Ovaries
Male Body System
 Males produce this sex cell
 Sperm
Male Body System
 This organ produces sperm
 Testes
Male Body System
 This organ (tube) is responsible for expelling both
urine and semen
 Urethra
Hormones
Key Point #5: A chemical released by a gland
in one part of the body that affects another
part of the body.
Male Sex Hormones
TESTOSTERONE:
Responsible for the production of “male” characteristics
 Increased muscle mass
 Body hair
 Deepening of the voice
Allows men to produce sperm
Female Sex Hormones
ESTROGEN:
the hormone responsible
for secondary sex
characteristics
The “egg producing”
hormone.
 PROGESTERONE:
 builds up the lining of the
uterus to prepare it for
the fertilized ovum; the
“egg-setting” hormone.
Work Time
 Directions: Complete the reproductive worksheet.
This is homework if not finished before the class ends.
 Time: 12 minutes
 Noise 1 (with partner)
Leave a question
 Tomorrow, we will be talking about sexual health and
STI’s. Please write an anonymous question on the
paper and leave it with me. I will try to answer as
many of the questions as I can. Please be honest and
remember this is for educational purposes.
Q&A
 During Q & A, we are silent, respectful, and raise our
hand to share.
Tell me what ya know!
Female Body System
 This hormone allows women to have a certain body
shape and more feminine characteristics
 Estrogen
Male Body System
 This hormone is the main hormone produced by men
 Testosterone

reach the uterus
 Fallopian Tubes
Female Body System
 This organ is a muscular path that connects the uterus
to the outside of the body
 Vagina
Female Body System
 This organ is where the zygote develops into a full
baby
 Uterus
Female Body System
 Females produce this sex cell
 Ovaries
Male Body System
 Males produce this sex cell
