AP Biology Evolution Exam Free Response Scoring Rubric
Question 1 (10 points max)
Part (a)
A maximum of 6 points may be given for part (a). A single point may be awarded for
each concept that follows.
 Reproductive potential – the ability to over produce
 Variability – inheritable changes or mutations linked to variability
 Limited resources – biotic or abiotic
 Differential reproduction – reproductive success of variants
 Generations – time needed for evolution to occur
 Elaboration – expansion of Darwin’s ideas such as the effects of environmental
change or artificial selection or a good, linked example
Part (b)
A maximum of 6 points can be scored in part (b). You may not receive a full score of 10
unless you attempt to answer 3 sections of part (b). Each is worth 2 points; 1 point for the
description of the idea and 1 point for an example.
a.) Convergent evolution
b.) Natural selection and the formation of insecticide-resistant bacteria
c.) Speciation and isolation
d.) Natural selection and behavior such as kinesis, dominance hierarchy, mate selection,
etc.
e.) Natural selection and heterozygote advantage
Question 2 (3 points max)
1 point for each prediction made and explained
Question 3 (4 points max)
p2 = homozygous dominant = 1 point
q2 = homozygous recessive = 1 point
2pq = heterozygous = 1 point
Correct description of a condition includes: large population size, no selection, no
mutation, no migration, and random mating = 1 point
Question 4 (4 points max)
1 point for each piece of data stated and 1 point for the explanation of each
