MISSION HOCKEY
NAME:
Activity: Develop marketing strategies for Mission Hockey’s product line.
In this activity, you will take the role of a marketing specialist, hired by Mission Hockey to
develop a marketing strategy for its equipment. First, you will select three items from
Mission's line of products and assess their features. Then, you will compare these items to
similar products offered by two competing companies. Once you have collected your
information, you will examine the size of the market and recommend a marketing strategy
to reach hockey players. As you work through the activity, use the chart below to record
your findings.

1. Go to Mission Hockey's web site and click on " Ice.” Choose three products that you
would like to compare; for example, skates, some form of protective padding, and perhaps a
hockey stick or helmet. List the products you select in the first column of the chart and
record the features you will compare in the second column. In the third column, record the
information for Mission Hockey products.
2. Visit 1800FaceOff.com to research the products offered by Mission Hockey's
competitors. This site offers products from many different manufacturers. For ice hockey
products, select "Ice Hockey Equipment" from the menu on the top of the page. Product
categories are listed on the left-hand side of the page. To obtain feature information, click
on the picture of the specific product you're interested in. Choose two of Mission Hockey's
competitors and for each, find three pieces of equipment it produces that are similar to
those you listed in column one. Identify the competitor and list the features and prices of
the competitors' products in columns three and four.
3. Compare Mission Hockey's products to those of its competitors. What similarities and
differences do you notice? Does Mission Hockey offer any unique product features? If so,
what are they?
4. To determine the size of the market for women's hockey equipment in Canada, go to the
Women's Hockey Web. Scroll down to "Canadian Information" and select "Canada." Scroll
down the page until you see the heading "Canadian Hockey," and click on the article
"Canadian Hockey Registration Statistics." Review the information and determine the size
of the market for women's hockey in Canada. What challenges do you think this market
poses for equipment manufacturers and retailers?
5. Use the information you gathered in this activity to prepare a short marketing report
for Mission Hockey. Your report should describe how Mission Hockey's products compare to
others currently on the market, and offer suggestions as to how the company can increase
sales and attract new customers (including female hockey players).
