Station 1
Read the section“Abnormal Cell Cycle: Cancer” on pages 254-255 in the Biology book.
1. What is cancer?
2. Cancer cells spend less time in which phase of the cell cycle?
3. What is the name of a substance or agent that causes cancer?
4. Who may be at a higher risk for developing cancer? List two groups of people.

questions below.
1. A normal stomach cell spends how many minutes in Interphase?
How many hours is this?
2. How many times longer is Interphase in a normal stomach cell than in a cancerous stomach cell (hint: divide
minutes in normal cell by minutes in cancerous cells)?
3. Compare the cell cycle of a normal and a cancerous stomach cell. Summarize in a few sentences how they are the
same and how they are different.
4. Why is the rate of cell division in a cancerous cell so problematic?
Station 3
Read the article about bacon, cigarettes, and cancer and then answer the questions below.
1. What is the PCRM?
The AIRC?

Do you think the billboard is misleading? Why or why not?
3. What are your thoughts on this article? Would it stop you from eating bacon? Why or why not? Site evidence from
the article to answer this question.

1. What are the three main categories of preventative measures you can take to reduce your risk of cancer?
2. How much of the cancer in the United States could be prevented by following the guidelines listed?
3. What are three things from the list you, personally, might realistically do to lower your cancer risk? Draw a picture
of each in the boxes below.
Station 5
1. Why do mutated cells not usually become cancerous?
2. What does benign mean?
Malignant?
3. Draw a picture of a tumor in the box below: Add blood vessels IN RED to show angiogenesis.

1. List two causes of cancer
2. What are three ways to treat cancer?
3. How can radiation therapy affect cancer?
4. What does chemotherapy do to help a cancer patient?
5. What does the doctor say will help cancer patients the most in the near future, based on recent research?
Station 7
Read about cancer research, then see Ms. Prehn. Once you answer her questions about cancer research based on what
you’ve read, she will sign on this line: ___________________________________.
