Transcript
BIO101 Unit 5
Kingdom Plantae I
angiosperms
flowering plants that produce seeds which are enclosed in fruits.
bryophytes
phylum of non-vascular plants which lack true roots, stems or leaves; moss, hornworts, and
liverworts are examples of plants of this phylum.
conifers
cone-bearing gymnosperm plants that include pine, cedar, and spruce trees.
deciduous
a group of angiosperm woody trees that shed their broad leaves during the fall and grow new
ones in the spring.
dicot
Abbreviation of dicotyledon. Flowering plant group; members have two embryonic leaves, netveined leaves, and flower parts in 4’s and 5’s.
evergreen
a group of gymnosperms that have needle-like leaves and stay green during all seasons.
gametophyte
the haploid generation of alternation of generations life cycle of plants; produces the gametes
that unite to form a diploid zygote which develops into the sporophyte generation.
gymnosperms
a type of woody seed plant where the seeds are produced “naked” in cones.
herbaceous
A plant with soft, green stems with little or no woody tissues; these plants usually die back each
winter.
monocots
Abbreviation of monocotyledon. Flowering plant group; characteristically members have one
embryonic leaf, parallel-veined leaves, and scattered vascular bundles.
multicellular
refers to an organism which is composed of many cells
phloem
vascular tissue that conducts food in plants.
photosynthesis
process by which plants and algae make their own food using the energy of the sun
protonema
structure which replaces the leaf in bryophytes.
rhizoids
rootlike underground structure of bryophytes
sporophytes
the diploid generation of the alternation of generations life cycle of plants; produces haploid
spores that develop into the gametophyte generation.
vascular plant
a plant that has vascular tissue (xylem and phloem)
woody
Plants whose secondary xylem builds up year after year forming annual rings. These plants do
not die back in the winter.
xylem
vascular tissue that transports water and minerals upward through the plant body.
