Scene 1
1. What do the following lines foreshadow?
“I pray thee, good Mercutio, let’s retire
The day is hot, the Capulets abroad.
And, if we meet, we shall not ‘scape a brawl,
For now, these hot days, is the mad blood stirring.” (Lines 1-4)
2. How does Romeo respond to Tybalt’s challenge? Why?
3. Explain “a grave man” (Line 96). Grave means serious, but it’s also the place
where a body is buried. Why do you think Mercutio says this and what literary
device is he employing?

“This gentleman, the Prince’s near ally,
