Bloom’s Taxonomy
Romeo and Juliet
William Shakespeare
Act I
Purpose of the Strategy
Bloom’s taxonomy can be used to create questions that aid students in discovering
what they know and comprehend about a given topic. It also allows them to utilize
higher order thinking skills to answer questions that require them to apply, analyze,
synthesize, and evaluate information.
Knowledge
Separate the characters presented in Act I into one of three groups: Capulet,
Montague or Neutral.
(Capulet: Capulet, Lady Capulet, Juliet, Nurse, Tybalt, Sampson, Gregory, Anthony,
Potpan
Montague: Montague, Lady Montague, Romeo, Benvolio, Abraham, Balthasar
Neutral: Prince, Paris, Mercutio)
Comprehension
At the beginning of the play, with who is Romeo sick with love?
(Rosaline)
Application
Do you think Juliet has a good relationship with her mother? Show with examples
from the play how she does or does not.
(She obeys what her mother asks her to do but she confides in her nurse more than
she does her mother.)
Analysis
From what you have read from Act I, distinguish three characteristics of the house of
Capulet and Montague each. They can be similar or different. Give a scene or line
number that justifies your choices. (Example: They are both dignified families—line 1
of prologue)
(Capulet: hot-tempered, social, leaders in society,
Montague: cold tempered, leaders in society, more peaceful)
Synthesis
What would have happened if Tybalt had been allowed to fight Romeo at the party?
(Romeo may have been killed then or never met Juliet etc.)
Summers 2001
3
Evaluation
Do you think it was a good idea for Romeo and his friends to crash the Capulet’s
party?
(Answers will vary)
