- Art Projects –
CHOICE 1: Costume Design
The setting of the play is fourteenth-century Italy, but actors in Shakespeare’s time would
have worn Elizabethan costumes. Make a costume book. Draw a minimum of one
authentic (based on research) costume for Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio, Prince Escalus,
Nurse, Friar Laurence, Lord Capulet, Lord Montague, Lady Capulet, and Lady
Montague. Label each costume according to the character, act, and scene. Include a oneparagraph explanation of each costume and a Works Cited page.
CHOICE 2: Shakespeare’s Theatre
Draw a detailed blueprint for, or build a model* of, the Globe Theatre. Base the
blueprint or model on research. Label the various parts of the blueprint. Include the
name/s of the source/s that was/were used. Write a two to three-page (typed) paper that
gives the history of Elizabethan theatre, including information on Shakespeare’s
company and plays enacted.
*NB: This must be of your own design & construction, NOT a purchased model.
CHOICE 3: Stage Design/Art Direction
Design five scenes from Romeo and Juliet. Display the scenes on a poster, on several
posters, or in shadow boxes (dioramas). Clearly label each scene according to scene and
act. Arrange the scenes in chronological order. Include an explanation of each scene.
Each explanation must be a minimum of one-half page in length. Base the information
about setting and costume on research. Include a Works Cited page for the sources used.
CHOICE 4: R&J Graphic Novel
Design a comic book, manga, or an illustrated children’s book that tells the story of
Romeo and Juliet. (minimum 15 pages) You may use the words of Shakespeare, or you
may write and illustrate a more modern version of the story. Type a one to two-page
paper which explains why you chose to represent things the way you did.
- Performance Projects –
CHOICE 5: Puppet Show
Select a scene with a minimum of four characters from the play. Make puppets to
represent all the characters in the scene. Puppets may be made out of brown paper bags,
construction paper, cloth, felt-tip markers, and other household items. On a poster, draw
the background that would be used for the puppet show. Write a one-page paper that
includes the act and the scene numbers of the selected scene, a detailed summary of the
scene, and an explanation of why you designed the puppets to look the way they look.
Present the show to the class. Put feeling and expression and vocal variety into the
presentation.
CHOICE 6: R&J, the Game
Develop a board game based on the story of Romeo and Juliet. Include all game pieces
and directions. The game should be enjoyable and educational. You must demonstrate
the game to show teacher and classmates how it works.
CHOICE 7: The Romance of Romeo & Juliet, in song
Write a song about Romeo and Juliet. Display the words of the song on a poster or scroll.
Sing the song to the class. Write a one-page explanation of the song, your ideas behind
it, and what you want/ed to express in the song.
CHOICE 8: Powerpoint Presentation
Do research on one aspect of the play that you are interested in: Acting, Staging,
Shakespeare’s life and/or writings, Elizabethan life, Romance/Courting, Marriage
customs, etc. Be sure to clear your subject with teacher. Produce a Powerpoint
presentation on the subject, 10 - 15 slides. Be sure to include a works cited page
ALL PROJECTS MUST BE COMPLETE, AND IN PROPER FORMATS,
& IT MUST BE CLEAR WHAT THE GENRE/PURPOSE OF YOUR PROJECT IS,
TO RECEIVE A GRADE!
