Choose one question from each Act of Romeo and Juliet and answer in a complete paragraph.
Use textual evidence to support your answer as needed.
Act I:
1.) Why do you think Shakespeare includes the scene where we find
out that Romeo is in love with Rosaline? How is Romeo’s infatuation
with Rosaline compared to his love for Juliet?
2.) Evaluate the final scene of Act I, where Romeo and Juliet fall in
love. Is there sudden love realistic or does it happen too quickly?
What images show the seriousness of their feelings?
3.) If you were Romeo and Juliet’s parents and you found out that they
were in love, what would you do? Do Romeo and Juliet have a good
reason to be upset?
Act II:
1.) What does Friar Laurence mean when he says to Romeo of
Rosaline, “O, she knew well/ Thy love did read by rote, that could not
spell.”
2.) Why are Romeo and Juliet in such a hurry to marry? Is this speed
justified, or is it just unwise? What do you think they should have
done in this situation?
3.) What is the Nurse’s attitude when Juliet first speaks to her about
Romeo? Why does she go along with Juliet’s plan to marry Romeo?
4.) What does Friar Laurence hope will happen when he marries
Romeo and Juliet? Do you think he is right to marry them without
consulting their parents?
5.) Friar Laurence says that loving moderately and slowly is better
than loving quickly and too much at once. Do you agree or disagree
with him? Why?
Act III:
1.) What two major complications occur for Romeo and Juliet in this
act? What are the problems that these complications create? (for them
individually, as a couple and for their families?
2.) What do you think the plan for Romeo and Juliet would have been if
the complications had not occurred? When would they have told their
families? How would they have told them?
3.) Do you think that Romeo was justified in killing Tybalt? Why or
why not?
4.) Evaluate Capulet’s change in attitude in this act. What was his
attitude towards Juliet and marriage in previous acts? What is his
attitude in this act? Why do you think he changes? Is this sort of
change typical for a parent or adult?
5.) Imagine that Juliet was NOT in love with Romeo. Do you think that
a marriage to Paris would cheer her up after the death of Tybalt? Do
you think that she would have gone through with it?
Act IV:
1.) Why might Shakespeare have included scene 4? What does this
scene add to the play?
2.) Do you think that Friar Lawrence’s plan was a good one? Why or
why not? What might be some alternatives? What are the advantages
and disadvantages of this plan?
3.) Choose two characters who you think have changed the most over
the course of the play. How have they changed?
