More Basic Beliefs:
• Three main gods are Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva
• Hindus believe in the unity of all of life
• All things in nature are part of the universal soul (atman)
• Hindus believe in reincarnation, and the goal is to free the soul from the body to reunite with brahman
• The cycle of birth and deaths continues until the soul reunites with brahman
• Karma governs cycle of rebirth or reincarnation, a person is born into a certain caste based on karma
or deeds in past lives

Important gods, terms, and texts of Hinduism
Directions: As you read pages 177-179 in the World Cultures textbook, define the main gods, terms
and texts from Hinduism.
Main gods:
Brahma - the Hindu god believed to be the creator
Vishnu - the Hindu god believed to be the preserver
Siva - the Hindu god believed to be the destroyer
Hindu Terms:
Brahma
brahman - the supreme force in the universe
sects - different religious groups within one religion, Hinduism has many
atman - each person’s essential self, and the universal soul that each person’s
essential self belongs to
moksha - freeing of the soul from the body so that the soul can unite with brahman and end the cycle of rebirth (the goal of Hinduism)
Vishnu
reincarnation - rebirth of the soul in a different form
karma - everything a person does will affect the person’s fate in a future or reincarnated life. It comes from a Sanskrit word meaning “to do.”
dharma - the duty each caste has to fulfill
Sacred Texts:
Vedas - Hindus believe the Vedas contain eternal truths that were revealed to wise men
Upanishads - Hindu text that helps to explain the truths contained in the Vedas
