Lab: Meiosis Cookies
Introduction:
Meiosis is the process of cellular division for sex cells (sperm and egg). Meiosis,
therefore is a critical process for sexual reproduction. It is the mechanism through
which genetic variation occurs.
In many ways, meiosis is mitosis X 2. Most of the phases occur twice. The key is that
two rounds of cell division take place, but only one round of DNA replication. This is why
meiosis is sometimes called “reduction division.” Meiosis results in the production of
four daughter cells, each containing half of the original genetic material.
Problem:
In this investigation, your assignment is to illustrate and explain the phases of meiosis in
an animal cell.
Materials:
3 Sandwich cookies (animal cells)
Paper Towel
Sprinkles (chromosomes) 12 of each of 3 colors (36 total)
Colored Pencils
Procedure:
1. Wash your hands and desk.
2. Get 3 sandwich cookies and place on paper towel.
3. Twist the cookies apart so you have 6 sides with icing on them. You will need to use
5. Cookies must remain on paper towel!
4. Get 48 assorted colored sprinkles (4 colors, 12 of each color), these will be used to
represent the chromosome pairs.
5. Using the icing end as a background, illustrate the phases of meiosis and
Interphase. Place the pairs of sprinkles on the icing, as you think the chromosome
pairs would look at each stage.
6. Sketch the phases of meiosis in the data section.
7. When you have completed this investigation, have your teacher check your meiosis
cookies for accuracy and be prepared to explain each stage of meiosis.
8. Once you have explained your meiosis cookies, feel free to dispose of cookies as
you will. (Yes, you may eat them.)
9. Complete the conclusion questions.
