Meiosis and Sexual Life Cycles Objectives (Chapter 13)
After reading this chapter and attending class, you should be able to:
1. Explain why organisms reproduce only their kind, and why offspring more closely
resemble their parents than unrelated individuals
2. Generally explain the molecular basis of heredity
3. Distinguish between sexual and asexual reproduction
4. Diagram a diploid sexual life cycle such as that of a human and explain the relative
positions and outcomes of mitosis and meiosis within that life cycle
5. List the phases of meiosis I and meiosis II and describe the events characteristic of each
phase
6. Recognize the phases of meiosis from diagrams or micrographs
7. Describe the process of sysapsis during Prophase I and explain how genetic
recombination occurs
8. Describe the key differences between mitosis and meiosis
9. Distinguish between the physical events of meiosis I and mitosis
10. Explain how independent assortment, crossing over and random fertilization contribute to
genetic variation in sexually reproducing organism
