Math TK-12 Scope and Sequence Course: Mathematics Grade Level(s): Fifth Grade Foundational Learning 1: Number Sense Goal 1: Number Relations Goal 2: Calculations Objective-Identify values and place values for whole numbers up to one billion and decimals to the thousandths using word form, expanded form, and standard form. Objective- Explore the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percents. Objective- Round whole numbers and decimals. Objective- Compare and order whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Objective- Read and write Roman numerals and translate to Arabic numerals. Objective- Identify fractional amounts. Objective- Simplify fractions and compute equivalent fractions. Objective- Identify prime and composite numbers and use prime factorization. Objective- Use factor trees to determine prime factorization. Objective- Use factors and multiples to calculate greatest common factor and least common multiple. Objective- Learn divisibility rules for 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, and 10. Objective- Understand and use properties of addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Objective- Understand the distributive property and use it to assist with mental calculations. Objective- Add, subtract, multiply (3-digit times 3-digit), and divide (by double digits) using whole numbers, decimals, fractions (with like and unlike denominators), and mixed numbers. Objective- Solve multi-step problems. Objective- Learn to make change with money by counting backward. Objective- Interpret meaning of remainder in a division problem. Objective- Use estimation and rounding to check the reasonableness of an answer. Objective- Practice mental math methods for everyday use. Objective- Review time using analog clock and calculate elapsed time. Objective-Practice and solidify customary measurement to the nearest inch, half-inch, quarter-inch, and eighth-inch. Objective- Convert between inches, feet, yards, and miles. Objective- Measure to the nearest centimeter and millimeter. Objective- Convert between kilometers, hectometers, dekameters, meters, decimeters, centimeters, and millimeters. Objective- Convert between all above forms for liters and grams. Objective- Convert between gallons, quarts, pints, cups, and ounces. Objective- Convert between pounds, ounces, and tons. Foundational Learning 3: Spatial Reasoning Goal 1: Geometry Goal 2: Graphing Objective- Learn basic geometry terms including points, lines, rays, line segments, parallel, perpendicular, intersecting, Objective- Identify acute, right, obtuse, and straight angles. Objective- Measure and draw angles of a specific size using various protractors. Objective- Identify various polygons and determine which are regular. Objective- Classify triangles by length of sides and angles. Objective-Classify, measure, and draw angles. Objective- Understand line and point symmetry, transformations, similarity, and congruency. Objective- Calculate area and perimeter of squares, rectangles, triangles and other polygons. Objective- Identify center, radii, diameters, and chords and understand the relationship between radius and diameter. Objective- Calculate circumference and understand relationship to radius and/or diameter. Objective- Draw circles of a certain size. Objective- Identify polyhedrons and quantify the number of faces, edges, and vertices. Objective- Calculate surface area of cubes and rectangular prisms. Objective- Plot ordered pairs on four quadrants. Objective- Interpret data using bar graphs, double bar graphs (horizontal or vertical), line graphs, line plots, and stem-and-leaf plots. ObjectiveGoal 2: Solve Objective- Solve algebraic expressions using the order of operations including parentheses. Foundational Learning 5: Probability and Statistics Goal 1: Statistical Analysis Objective- Calculate mean, median, mode, and range for a given data set. Objective- Interpret overall trend of data. Objective- Understand scale and interval on bar and line graphs and use to determine appropriate numbers when drawing graphs. Goal 2: Predictions Objective- Predict future trends based on past data. Objective- Solve patterns of numbers and/or shapes including patterns that vary (ex. +2, -1). Objective- Determine probability of a particular outcome.
