Ancient Greece

Summary: Students will be exploring the peninsula of Greece where land and sea meet to
form a rugged coastline. They will learn about the old sea cultures developed by the Minoans
and the Mycenaean civilization, other Greek city-states, and the devastating but legendary forces
of nature events. Students will get their first taste of democracy in the Athenian model as well as
be introduced to other forms of government. Finally, they will explore the fascinating world of
Greek mythology and other forms of literature. We will understand just how influential the
government and achievements of this time have on us today! Stay tuned….Greece is so
interesting that we will be there in Chapter 9 as well!

-Students will be able to illustrate and explain with words the geography of Greece
(should know that it is a peninsula and know mountainous terrain)
-Students will be able to explain how the geography shaped the culture of Grecian
civilizations
-Students will be able to list and describe the first civilizations of Greece (rise &
fall)
-Students will be able to describe several types of government including tyranny,
oligarchy, democracy
-Students should understand the life of an aristocrat in Greece

-Students will be able to list several leaders and connect them to the type of
government they were leading.

-Students will be able to describe the changes in democracy in Athens
-Students will compare Ancient Democracy vs. Modern Democracy
-Students will be able to define mythology, explain the purpose of myths, give an
example of a myth and create their own myth
-Students should understand the purpose of different types of Greek literature
-Students will be able to explain the different ways the ancient Greek civilizations
influenced the world that we live in
