TE 804 Learning Goals & EPE Table Template
Spring 2012
Name: Alice Wilcox
School: Cumberland Elementary
Grade Level: 4th/5th
Science Topic: Body Systems
Learning Goals
Describe the Science Process GLCEs and Standards that you will address in your unit.
Michigan Grade Level Content Expectation
Inquiry Process
S.IP.05.11 Generate scientific questions based on observations, investigations, and research.
S.IP.05.16 Identify patterns in data.
S.IA.05.13 Communicate and defend findings of observations and investigations using evidence.
S.RS.05.15 Demonstrate scientific concepts through various illustrations, performances, models, exhibits, and
activities.
Content Standards
L.OL.05.41 Identify the general purpose of selected animal
systems (digestive, circulatory, respiratory, skeletal, muscular, nervous, excretory, and
reproductive).
L.OL.05.42 Explain how animal systems (digestive, circulatory, respiratory, skeletal, muscular, nervous,
excretory, and reproductive) work together to perform selected activities.

Experiences
EPE Chart For (insert unit name here)
Patterns*
-Watch BrainPop Jr movie about the
Respiratory system
- We breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon
dioxide
-Fill out diagram of Respiratory System
and label the body parts used
-The respiratory systems exchanges gases
in the body
-Students will construct a lung with a pop
bottle and a balloon
- heart rate/pulse increases with activity
increases; heart rate/pulse decreases when
activity decreases
-Students will play a ball toss activity
where they have to where they have to
pretend they are an oxygen particle and
have work their way through the
Respiratory System
-The flow of blood always passes through
the heart and lungs as it passes through the
body.
- Each time the heart pumps blood it beats
-Students will participate in a lung capacity or pulses
activity with a balloon and then will
- The systems are continuously working in
measure the diameter of it
our bodies without us feeling it
- Watch BrainPop Jr movie about the
circulatory system
-students will trace the blood flow inside a
human body with their finger using a
picture from the textbook
-Watch a more advanced BrainPop video
about the circulatory system
-Students will check and record their
pulses after doing 3 different activities for
1 minute a piece: sitting, walking, and
2
Explanations*
-Air goes in your body through your nose
and mouth, travels down your trachea to
the bronchi tubes. The tubes split into two
and take it into the lungs. The diaphragm
contracts to leave space for the air in the
lungs. In the lungs the oxygen travels to air
sacs called alveoli. The alveoli are very
thin and allow the oxygen to diffuse into
capillaries in the bloodstream. The
capillaries drop off waste (carbon dioxide)
so it can be exhaled through the mouth and
nose. At this time, the diaphragm expands
to push the carbon dioxide out of the body.
- The Circulatory system is responsible for
transporting materials throughout the body.
The heart pumps blood through your whole
body. The oxygen that you get from the
respiratory system gets into the
bloodstream in the lungs. It goes back to
the heart. The heart pumps the blood into
the arteries. It delivers oxygen and
nutrients to the entire body. Then the blood
goes back to the heart through the veins.

jumping jacks
-Students will have several discussions
about the different systems
- Students will create models to show how
the heart pumps blood to different parts of
the body
-Students will use names of the parts of the
circulatory system to create a song about
the system.
