Course Description:
This class will study the historical development of the world from the earliest settlements of
Mesopotamia to modern times. Students will learn how the foundations of world values, society,
government, economy and political structure evolved during this historical period. Students will
also learn how this evolution shaped present day America.
History Specialization Outcomes Met by this Course
-Students will acquire an understanding of the historical framework for the development of world
civilizations
-Students will demonstrate an understanding of multicultural perspectives and realities of
history, including the contributions over many centuries of various races, nations, and faiths to
the world
-Students will acquire a sophisticated awareness of the relationships that develop through time
between political, social, economic, cultural, intellectual and religious factors, wearing into
“patterns” and trends.
-Students will acquire a rudimentary sense of historiography – Historical argumentations and
debate – on key questions of professional research.
-Students will develop communications skills to express historical perspectives, including writing
and oral presentations or expression.
Make-up work should be completed as quickly as possible. Worland High School policy will
be followed for all make-up work. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTACT
THE INSTRUCTOR AND IF NECESSARY SCHEDULE MAKE-UP APPOINTMENTS. After
one week has elapsed from the date of the original exam, the instructor reserves the right to
administer an exam using a different format for the make-up exam.
Typing vs. Not Typing:
All work must be legible. Make sure your writing is clear and easy to read. If it is not, typing is
recommended.
Supplies needed:
 Binder/folder
 Paper
 Pencils/pens
 Optional – colored pencils are used. I provide a class set, but you may bring your own
personal set.
Grading:
A student’s grade for the course will be based on the percentage of the total possible
points that student acquires during the semester. (+ & - grades may be used)
89.5% and above ------ A
79.5-89.49% ----------- B
69.5-79.49% ----------- C
59.5-69.49% ----------- D

Access to technology: if a student were to violate the school’s acceptable use policy,
accessing school computers might be problematic. I will review each case individually to
ensure that no student’s grade will be negatively influenced by a tech. suspension.
Examples: laptop issued with limited access (word only), hand-written essays, supervised
research, etc.

Students demonstrate an understanding of the people, events, problems,
ideas, and cultures that were significant to the history of our world.
Standard 5: People, Places and Environments
Students demonstrate an understanding of interrelationships among people,
places, and environments.
Standard 6: Technology, Literacy, and Global Connections
Students use technology and literacy skills to access, synthesize, and
evaluate information to communicate and apply social studies knowledge to
global situations.
