Red Army (Bolsheviks) v. White Army
*News about the 1917 Revolution in Russia quickly spread to
neighboring countries
*An army organized to prevent the spreading of communism.
This army later became known as the “White” army. Others
who joined the White Army included those who wanted Russia
to remain in WWI, previous members of the bourgeoisie, the
Russian Orthodox Church, and people who wished to reestablish the monarchy.
*While the White Army grew, Trotsky, a military
mastermind, mobilized the newly established Red Army in
the Soviet Union. This Red Army was made up of peasants,
workers, and officers from the previous Russian Army that
overthrew Czar Nicholas II.
*Trotsky, backed by the Bolsheviks/Red Army (communists),
signed a peace treaty with the German Empire to pull
Russia out of WWI. In trade for pulling Russia out of WWI,
Russia then would have to give up pieces of their land to
Germany.
*People were angered by the treaty, so Civil War then followed.
Western countries were concerned of a possible GermanRussian alliance and intervened to stop the Bolshevik Red
Army.
* The Bolsheviks/Red Army defeated the White Army and
kept control of the communist government, and Trotsky and
Stalin set out to oversee the Soviet Union.
